DCI Minneapolis and System Blue Camp Information

DCI (Drum Corps International) is coming to Minneapolis this summer for the first time at the new TCF Bank Stadium on the U of M campus.

Check out these attachments for information regarding the show (including the list of performing corps) on Saturday, July 17.

Also attached is information regarding a special marching and colorguard skills camp taught by members of the Blue Devils, Santa Clara Vanguard, and MN Brass - this four-day workshop includes a performance at the DCI show alongside members of the corps.

13th Annual Waseca Jazz Festival

WHS will be hosting the 13^th Annual Waseca Jazz Festival on Saturday, January 30th. The entire festival will be hosted in CIS, with the 7:00 Evening Showcase Concert in the CIS Auditorium. This non-competitive event was begun to promote the education and performance of jazz music in southern Minnesota. Each year, the festival attracts 8-12 high school and middle school jazz ensembles. These groups perform throughout the day, receiving evaluations and feedback from a panel of nationally recognized jazz artists and educators.

This year we are pleased to have with us two excellent performers and clinicians, as well as another return by the Southern MN Real Big Band. David Hagedorn, vibes, returns from Northfield, where he teaches at St. Olaf and performs frequently in the Twin Cities. John Paulson, sax/flute, joins us for the first time from Winona, where he teaches at Saint Mary’s University and is also a frequent performer in that area. Even if you do not consider yourself a “jazz fan,” I believe you will be entertained. Please check it out and spread the word. (Unfortunately, one of our originally advertised artists, Judi Donaghy, is unable to make it this year.)

Admission to the band’s performances and masterclasses during the day is free and open to the public. Admission to the Evening Showcase Concert is $7 for everybody and tickets are only available at the door. We are very fortunate to have received two grants to help fund this event: one from Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council and another from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Foundation.

It has certainly been a roller-coaster of a fall here at Waseca High School, with a great deal of success in our Fall Sports, a wonderful production of "Joseph..." by the drama and music departments, and many other wonderful things happening by our students and staff. Of course, we've also had our hard times, but every day I am thankful that we have the opportunity to live and teach in a wonderful school system.

This week we hope to continue the excitement with our Bluejay football team in the State Quarterfinals and also with our annual Indoor Marching Concert. Because of the Saturday night football playoff game, we will be finishing up the Indoor Concerts with a special SUNDAY AFTERNOON performance at 4:00 PM.

* ** Here are some important details regarding the Indoor Concert:

Performances: Thursday & Friday at 7:30 PM (doors open at 6:45), Sunday at 4:00 PM (doors will open at 3:15)

Admission: Tickets are on sale in advance at Waseca Music Co. and Radio Shack - Adults $7, Students (K-12) $4 - also there is an Advance Ticket Special for adults purchasing two or three nights, as well as students purchasing three nights; Staff Activity passes and Senior Citizen Gold Passes will be accepted at the door for one night only

With the change to Saturday's show, all Saturday tickets will be honored for Sunday's 4:00 performance. Also, if people with advance tickets for Saturday would like to exchange for Thursday or Friday night, you can do so by visiting the store where they purchased the tickets to exchange.

Also, the ALUMNI CORPS performance that was planned for Saturday night has been postponed to next year - unfortunately with the change in schedule we won't be able to make it happen this year, but we have had a lot of interest and feel confident that we will back even bigger and better next year.

If you have never been to the Indoor before, we certainly invite you to take it in for the first time - I believe you will be entertained throughout. The band has worked extremely hard all season long, learning one of our most challenging shows in the least amount of time and receiving recognition at festivals in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa. Some of the highlights of the Indoor include seeing the complete field show (all but one set) on the gym floor, colorguard and percussion features, special lighting effects, and a group of outstanding marchers known as Top Velocity.
