• Don Miller

Don Miller graduated from Waseca High School in 1950 and from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1954 with a B.S. degree in Physical Education and Mathematics.

While in high school, Don was one of the most outstanding all-around athletes to ever perform for the Bluejays.  He earned 13 letters while playing in four sports; three in football, three in basketball, three in track and four in baseball.

Don was an outstanding All-Conference quarterback of two South Central Conference Champion football teams with one undefeated season.  He was team captain as a senior when he cracked a bone in his leg in the first game of the year and it was feared that he would be out for the season.  His brother LeRoy made him an aluminum leg brace with a swivel hinge and Don was back on the playing field by the 5th game.  He was a guard in basketball, playing for Coach Whitey Aamot; his team won two SCC championships, a district title, region title and a state consolation championship.  Don was a senior captain of the basketball team.  In track, he ran the dashes, threw the shot put and discus.  In baseball, he was a four-year starting pitcher.

In college, Don earned letters in three varsity sports.  A quarterback at Waseca High School, Miller shifted to guard at Gustavus.  The move proved to be a shrewd one.  As Co-captain of the 1954 squad that finished 6-0 in the conference and 7-2 overall, Miller was named to the All-MIAC team.  A four-year starting pitcher for the baseball Gusties, he had the distinction of playing under three different coaches.  Don also participated in track.

After graduation, Don started his teaching and coaching career at Hinckley, MN.  He returned to St. Peter in 1958, where he coached high school football and baseball for five years.  He then joined the Mankato school system, where he taught math while coaching football, baseball, swimming and gymnastics.  In 1973, he became the athletic director of Mankato East and held this position until he retired in 1989.

After a career in coaching and athletic management spanning four decades, Miller’s awards and honors include:  Region 2AA Athletic Director of the Year in 1984, State Athletic Director of the Year in 1989, 25 year Coaches Award and Coach of the week several times.  Don Miller was inducted into the Gustavus Adolphus College Hall of Fame in 1990.

Don is a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato and of the Mankato Riverblenders Chorus for 41 years.  He was named Barbershopper of the Year in 1975 and 1997.

Don and his wife, Granis, celebrated 53 years of marriage.  Granis passed away in 2007.  Their family includes six children; Steve, Doug, Sue, Jo, Dave, and Amy, 18 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
