The Waseca High School Bluejays held off a late push from Fairmont to claim a thrilling 4-2 home victory, highlighted by a jaw-dropping 55-yard free kick from Tovin Grannis in the final minutes.

Waseca maintained a slight edge in possession, controlling the ball 52.3% of the time, while Fairmont managed 47.7%. Both teams created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the match, with Waseca taking 14 shots and Fairmont 15. Attacking transitions were nearly even, but the Bluejays’ ability to capitalize on key moments proved decisive.

The scoring opened with Diego Toapanta putting Waseca ahead, and he later added a second goal to keep the Bluejays in control. Nolan Mcquery and Edwin Aragon also found the back of the net, giving Waseca a 3-2 lead late in the match. The game remained tight until Grannis’ spectacular free kick from 55 yards out in the final 1:38, which provided the insurance goal to seal the win.

Grannis’ strike was not only remarkable for its distance but also for the timing, coming when Fairmont was pressing hard for an equalizer. His execution showcased both skill and composure under pressure, earning cheers from the home crowd.

Set pieces were another area where Waseca excelled, converting four of eight corners into goals, while Fairmont managed just two from four opportunities. Passing efficiency also played a role, with Waseca completing 119 of 235 passes (51%), slightly better than Fairmont’s 105 of 222 passes (47%). Brady Tlougan and Sunny Mei anchored the midfield, controlling the pace and helping link defense to attack, while Toapanta and Mcquery led the offensive charge.

With this victory, the Bluejays build momentum and confidence heading into the next challenge. The team will be back in action Tuesday on the road against the New Ulm Eagles, looking to continue their strong start to the season.
