The Waseca girls’ tennis team battled through a hard-fought matchup on Thursday, earning a 5-2 victory over Marshall in Big South Conference-Black Division play.
In singles action, No. 1 seed Vivian Mader rallied after dropping the opening set to defeat Brooklyn Mauch, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Ava Miller followed a similar path, overcoming an early deficit to knock off Kathryn Coudron, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Marshall’s Kyra Bailey secured a point for the Tigers at No. 3 singles, outlasting Pearl Moore, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, but Waseca’s Layla Keith quickly answered with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Cora Medina at No. 4 singles.
The Bluejays were equally strong in doubles play. The top pairing of Paige Dufault and Maddy Benson secured a 6-4, 6-3 win, while the No. 2 duo of Hannah Rugger and Anna Benson cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Marshall claimed the No. 3 doubles spot, as Emry Jans and Julia Pafko defeated Madison Rasche and Chloe Hagen, 6-3, 6-3.
With the win, Waseca improves to 5-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Bluejays now turn their attention to Saturday’s Waseca Triangular at the high school courts. The action begins at 9:00 a.m. with Waseca taking on Le Sueur-Henderson, followed by Le Sueur-Henderson vs. Blue Earth Area at 11:00 a.m., and the day wraps up with Waseca facing Blue Earth Area at 1:00 p.m.
