With the boys basketball state tournament tipping off Tuesday at Target Center and Williams Arena on the University of Minnesota campus, excitement is building across Minnesota as the best teams — and players — take center stage.
In anticipation of the tournament, the Star Tribune’s Strib Varsity unveiled its 2025–26 All-Minnesota Team, highlighting the top 25 players in the state. Selections were based on individual performance and feedback from coaches across multiple classes and conferences, showcasing the depth of talent throughout Minnesota high school basketball.
Among those honored is Waseca’s own Deron Russell, whose standout senior season has placed him firmly among the elite.
Russell, a 6-foot-1 guard, has delivered one of the most electrifying scoring seasons in the state. He averaged 30 points per game during the regular season and enters the state tournament with five 40-point performances — including an impressive 50-point outing. His ability to take over games offensively has made him a must-watch player as Waseca competes on the state’s biggest stage.
In addition to his success on the court, Russell has drawn Division I interest in both basketball and football, a rare achievement that speaks to his overall athleticism and versatility. He has committed to continue his athletic career at North Dakota State, where he will play football.
The Bluejays will face Minnehaha Academy tomorrow, March 25th, at 8:00 p.m. at Williams Arena in the MSHSL State Class AA Boys Basketball Quarterfinals.

Waseca fans and the broader community will have plenty of reason to tune in this week as Russell and the Bluejays look to make a deep run. His recognition on the All-Minnesota Team not only highlights his individual excellence but also shines a spotlight on the strength of Waseca’s program.
As the tournament begins, all eyes will be on Minnesota’s top talent — and Deron Russell is certainly among the brightest stars.
