The Waseca High School golf teams have made steady progress throughout the spring season, with both the boys and girls squads showing growth, competitiveness, and strong team chemistry as they head toward the stretch run of the season.
So far this year, both teams have competed in four stand-alone meets or duals, along with one home dual and one home conference meet featuring both the boys and girls teams. With several events now in the books, the Bluejays are beginning to see hard work translate into results on the course.
On the girls side, Waseca currently sits at .500 in dual competition this season while continuing to gain valuable experience in conference play. In their two conference tournaments, the Bluejays have finished in the bottom half of the standings, but there have been plenty of bright spots that point toward continued improvement.
Madison Rasche has consistently paced the girls team, leading Waseca with the lowest scoring average this season. Elli Hoban has also emerged as one of the team’s biggest success stories, showing considerable week-to-week improvement compared to her scoring averages from a year ago.
The Bluejays have also benefited from the addition of sophomores Maddie Root and Ashley Fliflet, who have quickly become valuable members of the program. Both newcomers have embraced the work required to improve, and their commitment has been reflected on the scorecard as each continues to routinely post personal-best rounds.
Waseca is also excited to welcome late addition Tyler Stagman into the lineup, as she is set to compete in her first meet. Her arrival adds another layer of depth to a girls team that continues to grow. While Alexa Welander is away this week, the team looks forward to her return, as her positive energy, dedication, and commitment to improving her swing and ball contact continue to make a strong impact within the program.
The boys team has enjoyed a strong start to the season, posting a perfect 3-0 record in dual competition. Waseca also turned in an impressive showing at its most recent tournament at Shoreland Country Club, finishing fifth as a team against solid competition.
The highlight of the day came from Braiden Nelson, who fired an outstanding 73 to earn second place individually—one of the top performances of the season so far for the Bluejays.
Waseca’s varsity lineup has been led by a consistent core group that includes Brody Dufault, Avery Selvik, Karter Selvik, TJ Corcoran, Colin Selvik, and Dylan Hansen. That group has delivered steady production while continuing to focus on incremental improvements that have strengthened the team week after week.
Beyond the varsity level, the future looks bright for Bluejay boys golf. A growing JV roster—larger than in recent years—has created added flexibility throughout the program while giving multiple players meaningful opportunities to compete and develop. Several players continue to push toward varsity contention, creating healthy competition that is helping elevate the entire team.
Perhaps most importantly, both programs have built strong camaraderie this spring. Team bonding, support for one another, and a close-knit culture have become defining traits of Waseca golf, helping create an environment where players are motivated to improve while enjoying the journey together.
With the Big South Conference Championship quickly approaching at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club, the focus now shifts toward finalizing the six boys and six girls who will represent Waseca in postseason competition. A practice round at Dacotah Ridge next week will help determine those championship lineups.
As the Bluejays prepare for the conference championship, both teams continue to trend in the right direction—improving scores, building confidence, and laying the foundation for a strong finish to the season.
