Congratulationst to our Area Learning Center! Waseca Area Learning Center Receives 2024 Minnesota Promising Practice Award MINNEAPOLIS—Waseca Area Learning Center was one of 11 honorees celebrated for excellence by Synergy & Leadership Exchange and Saint Mary’s University at the Character Recognition Awards on May 22. The event brought together educators and leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors to recognize the exemplary achievements of the honorees. Waseca Area Learning Center received a Minnesota Promising Practices Award for “Theatre for Social Justice.” Promising Practices are unique and successful practices that promote character development in Pre-K–grade 12 students. Students at the ALC study social justice, art as activism, and theatrical performance and then choose, rehearse, and perform a play with one or more social justice themes as a public service presentation for their communities. “Students use artistic expression and performance to communicate what might be too difficult to speak about personally,” said Language Arts and Theatre teacher, Dawn Skinner. Key highlights of the event included a welcome from Minnesota Department of Education deputy commissioner Stephanie Graff along with a presentation of the “Character Recognition Day” governor’s proclamation, an inspiring keynote from Character.org president Dr. Arthur Schwartz, and an awards presentation highlighting innovative and successful practices, programs, and outcomes in character and ethical leadership development. “Character development is important because we need to equip our students with the skills to face the tests of life, not just a life of tests,” said Dr. Schwartz. "The Character Recognition Awards is a great event to spotlight character as a measure of success and to celebrate the remarkable work being done by schools, community programs and individual leaders," said Wanda Sommers Wall, executive director of Synergy & Leadership Exchange. “A sincere thank you to our 2024 event sponsors Blaze Credit Union, FranklinCovey Education and Sourcewell.” Through events like the Character Recognition Awards, Synergy & Leadership Exchange aims to motivate honorees for continued success, inspire others with exemplary examples and promising practices and celebrate the transformative impact of character formation in schools and community programs. ### Synergy & Leadership Exchange is a nonprofit organization and program of the South Central Service Cooperative. It is dedicated to fostering collaboration to advance the development of ethical citizens, providing educational resources, and celebrating achievement and best practices in Minnesota schools, businesses and communities.
